Stirling Engine

Fall ‘21

In the class Machine Design and Manufacturing (course MEAM 201), we were tasked with designing, machining, and assembling a complete Stirling Engine. My design was inspired by Thomas the Tank Engine, the titular character of a TV show that molded my childhood. I like to think of this engine as my way of saying thanks.

Very pleased with the final result. The rod connecting each of the flywheels wasn’t manufactured properly leading to issues with their collaborative rotation, so I could only test the driving wheel without the rod. It spun consistently around 800 RPM, which I was satisfied with given the small size of the flywheel relative to others in the class.
